It looks like Jared Loughner, the shooter, may have been simply loony tunes, not specifically right-wing. Now, the fact that he is a loon, which is amply apparent from his YouTube page, does not mean he isn't a right-winger. There's a lot of crazy talk about a "new currency" and "mind control" and how most people in the 8th district are illiterate because they don't understand English grammar, etc. In any event, he's crazy, he seems to be a paranoiac/conspiracy theorist/nutjob. But let's just say for a moment that it turns out he doesn't have any particular right-wing or Tea Party connection.
That does not mean that the violent rhetoric on the right is okay, okay? It may mean that this specific incident is not a further piece of evidence that such violent rhetoric is problematic, although I could debate that point if I wanted to. But we liberals were critical, you'll remember, of this violent rhetoric from the first, and it remains bad whether or not this shooting had that particular political motivation.
